....Hvar is really a monument city: wonderful is the Main City Square,
the most big in Dalmatia
with over than 4.500 square mts of extension.
Cathedral of Saint Steven with its renaissance belfray dominates the square together with a magnificent City Well, of 1529....
....again, in the Square, the Communal Theatre, erected in 1612,
is the most ancient municipal theatre in Europe....
and then, the ancient Treasury who keeps inside many valuables portraits... again, The Arsenal, who started to be built
at the beginning of 13th century....
...along the promenade from the Square, You will find
the
monumental
sixteenth-century Venitian Loggia,
who was destroyed by turkishes
in 1571 and then rebuilt
at the beginning of 18th century on Renaissance style:
its tower clock of the end of 15th century is of remarkable value...
...going up from the Square to the Fortress, by the alleys
of Leporini, you can admire the splendid Hectorovic Palace,
built in
15th century on a late gotic-venetian
style...
...in the southern part of the town, coming from the Riva,
in Kriza,
You will find the Franciscan Monastery who
was built
between 1461
and 1471 as sailors' refuge.
Its splendid cloister, with its monumental rounded off arches
and with a well, enriches the entire Renaissance Monastery.
The complex is magically surrounded
by wonderful gardens
and it is totally walled... |
...Hvar is full of bell towers and that of Sveti Markan
plucked at the back of the town
is surely one of the most beautiful...
...but, Hvar is not only History and monuments...
it's an elegant and cosy tourist port...
...a good variety of open bars who
serve very good cappuccinos...
...and restaurants of excellent quality...
...and a surprising nightlife
in the disco bars of the harbour
or
in the discotheque up in the pinewood...
